In December 2009 Cucumber Satellite joined with Mutant Films in a new luxurious 3500 sq. ft. studio in Railtown Vancouver (just east of Gastown). This exciting move marked a new beginning for the Society.

While it continues to be a formidable training centre for professional actors, writers and directors, Cucumber Satellite is extremely excited to have several new works in development and the addition of this “boutique” sound stage, green screen and theatre seemed an inevitable next step.

A melting pot of creative exploration, Cucumber Satellite maintains a reputation for excellence without losing its respect for risk. Always learning, growing and daring, members of this unique ensemble have tremendous respect for craft and each other. What will the future hold?

The studio is a fantastic resource helping us continue the outstanding quality of work that we have become known for.

What We Do

At Cucumber Satellite Theatre and Film Society we search out topics that are emotionally significant and universally human and explore them through education, writing, live performance, and media.

We have been called a live enigmatic jigsaw puzzle working closely as an ensemble while encouraging individuality and change in the pieces. We recognize the need for expression and connection and the uselessness of navel gazing. We believe that short cuts are for pansies; the fun is in the process and risk means everything.

Writing, directing, acting, learning, creating and exploring life sparks imagination, ignites the senses and makes us vital.

We don’t create out of a need to be recognized, we create because we recognize the beauty and utter madness of it all. Performing in and watching good stage, film and television should show us how connected we are. It should be as disturbing as it is soothing, as breathtaking as it is painful. It is the photo album of existence, the home movie of discovery in which we all take part. Cucumber Satellite is dedicated to the development of theatre, film and television arts.

Working intimately with writers, directors and actors to cultivate the rich and elusive territories of wild imaginations. The educational and creative components are rigorous endeavours committed to supporting artists at various stages of their careers.

Backstory

"A lot of people ask about the name Cucumber Satellite. Many have said “What? Were you making a salad or something?”

Yes, as a matter of fact I was. I was making a salad to take with me to work. I was still at Lyric School of Acting at the time. While chopping the vegetables I was really thinking about what it was I wanted to do. How I wanted to proceed in my work.

Artistic relationships were strained at Lyric and I didn’t agree with the route it was taking. I knew I would be venturing out on my own. I wanted to explore the performance arts with a curio that went beyond anything I had done before.

I had been working closely with teenagers and young adults whose boundless energy and passion served as fuel for countless artistic adventures. With ongoing classes and various intensive study sessions we had begun to form an ensemble that was unlike anything I had known previously. Chop, chop, chop…and then came the cucumber. As I was chopping I was appreciating the smell and texture. I thought, “Cucumbers are cool and satellites get stuff out there. Cucumber Satellite – getting cool stuff out there. Excellent.”
